Any other suggestions?
I believe I fixed the problem. Try again. Do it 4, 5, or 6 times if you have to. But only 3 should work now.
I'll take a look in a few and make sure it's still working.

Sorry it didn't work earlier. The whole reason I set this up was so you could get it on Christmas day if you wanted it.

EDIT: It appears to be working. I see people forcing the update again.

Thanks RokuTaylor. Just retried it and it has now successfully updated the software. Many thanks!

It worked for me, but it took quite a few times... probably closer to 10... love the new update, thanks for the post!

RokuTaylor wrote:You no longer have to send me your serial number to get the update immediately. For future updates I think a better method is in order, but for now I have a self-serve option for you.

I've taught the server a new trick. If you check for the software update more than 3 times within about a 30 second period, it should now offer you the 1.5 update. Otherwise you stick to the roll out plan.

Just go to Settings>Player Info>Check for update.
It will say "Your software is up to date"
Check again 2 more times. On the 3rd time it should start downloading the software.

Please let me know if this doesn't work as I have described.

I believe that when you attempted it was right after my first attempted fix didn't work, but before I got it actually fixed right (about a 5 min period there.) I think you were one of those 5 people that had to try about 5-10 times.
In other words, I believe it's fixed now and as far as I can tell everyone is getting it within 3 tries.

I'll check back a little later. Anyone let me know if you're having difficulty. There's a parameter I can tweak that may help. The server is very busy this morning and it sort of affects this due to the way this implementation only keeps track of a certain number of requests in a short period of time.
I think I got it, though.
(I'll make this more robust in the future when I have the time.)

Re: Software 1.5 upgrade

After upgrading yesterday I sat down to watch some HD movies. The first one I watched stopped in the middle and wouldn't continue any further. Even when I fast forwarded it went back to the spot where it stopped. The second movie started to load then quit.

I then played a non HD movie and it worked fine. Is there a problem with HD?
What were the movies?
I was watching "Holiday" last night - 4 dots (no HD--my TV isn't HD-capable), the debugging message said I negotiated a 1.5Mbps stream on my 10Mbps network. 30 minutes before the end of the movie, at approximately 5pm PST, the box spontaneously rebooted. After that self-reboot, it couldn't find my queue. (I checked the Netflix web site: 24 titles in my queue, with "Holiday" in the first slot.) The "Player Info" screen couldn't find my name.

I ended up deactivating the device from my account, reactivating the device, and eventually everything was back to normal and I watched the rest of "Holiday". Was there a server problem last night with the Seattle content farm?

Also last night, at approximately 6:20pm, I selected "Forbidden Planet" but the Box couldn't complete the initial buffer load. I ran speedtest.net to Seattle and got a 8350Kbps download rate. I reselected "Forbidden Planet" to watch and then it loaded ok and played fine all night long, though some of the colors looked a little off. (Near the opening a crew member comments "Dig that crazy sky," the other says, "Yes, but I prefer blue", but this time, with the 1.05 version of the code, the sky did look blue, whereas on the 1.01 version and on DVD it isn't blue. Also, Dr. Morbius' living room is trimmed in a different color in this viewing.)

For what it's worth, I am using the composite video connection to the TV and will probably be continuing to do so until some day this TV gives up the ghost.

Also, my router is configured to use OpenDNS as my DNS server.

NEVER deactivate your device!!!! That goes against how many devices you can have for 1 year. Worst case, reset the box and reactivate with a new code. Reactivating does not take any additional slots against your current 4 devices per year but deactivating a device does take one away from you.

Are you sure about that?
That's not supposed to be the case. If you deactivate then re-activate later it is supposed to be considered re-activation of the same device.
I'm going to check in to this and make sure it's not counting against anyone.

When I talked to the tech support guy at neflix a few months back, That is what he told me. It is highly possible that they changed it since then but at the time he said once you deactivate a device it stays deactivated for 1 year (or whenever your year is up). This was around the same time that they changed it on the computers that once a computer hasn't watched a movie for one week the device goes back into your pool again.

Hmm, it didn't work here after 10 tries. But when I changed the connection from wireless to wired, the upgrade came down in 3.

Looks like Netflix may have recently relaxed the limits for instant viewing devices. My account page now says that up to six unique devices may be used for watching. Devices may be activated/deactivated, and the "twelve month" anniversary date is no longer listed on the page.

Youtube would be a total waste of effort. It's already ubiquitous, so adding it to Roku would be pretty useless. Hulu seems to be the obvious choice...

Forget You tube. Hulu would be great or any or all of the major network streams.
