Nokia N800 to Control Roku ... and Rhapsody?

Postby atmasphere » Wed Mar 28, 2007 9:49 am

I searched and found a single topic referencing the N800 ... a few on Rhapsody, but none together.

I'm interested in using either the (just released) Rhapsody client for the N800 or the MediaStreamer app to control a Roku on my home network. My goal would be to basically use the N800 as a remote from anywhere in my house and let http://www.maemoapps.com/2007/03/27/rha ... -the-n800/ Roku handle the rest.

In theory this will work, but I can't find anyone else who's reporting success with this setup.

Also - Rhapsody support seems limited to require a PC with Rhapsody on - which I don't have. I run Mac and my Rhapsody account is connected directly through my Nokia N800 tablet.

Is this a possible configuration or a doomed to fail plan which will frustrate my wife?

There's a subtle difference when using the N800 as a controller. The N800 treats the Roku as a UPnP media renderer. This means that, to the N800, the Roku is just a player. All song and queue management, all album recognition, all control is handled by the N800.

So it's not so much that N800 controls the SoundBridge as it plays songs on the SoundBridge.

That said, it's still very cool. I use mine all the time.

Hi,

I tried to use my N800 in the same way without any success. It connects to my PC and shows all shared music library and plays on N800. However when I select the Soundbridge as the playback device, Sounsbridge stops whatever is playing and N800 gives an error message saying 'invalid media', unable to play.

I am using WMP 11 to share my music. Any idea what could be wrong?

Regards,

Perhaps the N800 has the same issue with WMP11 that the Cidero controller did? Just a guess - The N800 developers could probably check this pretty quick.

I guess you are right. I installed Tversity upnp server and it works ok with N800 and Soundbridge.

Thank you for your support.

Obviously the problem is with the WMP11. The setup in the Youtube movie is using Twonky Media Server. I have used Tversity server and it works.

I have found a roundabout way to control my two M1000s using my N800 and WMP11. Because I suscribe to Yahoo Music Unlimited, I am "limited" to using either WMP11 or the Yahoo Server for my DRM subscription music.

My server machine is running Windows XP home. I installed TightVNC on my server and VNC Viewer 0.6 on my N800. This allows me remotely access my server through my N800. I am now able to control my M1000s with my N800 by remotely running VisualMR on my server.

For those of you running XP Pro or Vista, an alternative (preferred) approach is to use rdesktop on N800. http://beans.seartipy.com/2007/10/29/ac ... -rdesktop/

Unless you are using the features of VisualMR that the Soundbridge doesn't have natively, it would be way more straight forward to just access the Soundbridge directly from the Nokia, see http://www.kjainvestments.com/sb

I agree it would be more straight forward, however, I'm running OS2008 and TabletBridge is currently not an option.
