Attention iTunes Users!

Postby RokuPatrick » Tue Sep 12, 2006 10:26 am

With the release of iTunes 7.0 today, Apple has changed some of the underlying technology that allows the SoundBridge to communicate directly with iTunes. We hope to have an iTunes 7.0- compatible release of the SoundBridge software soon; however, at this time all SoundBridges are incompatible with the music sharing feature of iTunes 7.0. We recommend that SoundBridge owners wait for a SoundBridge update before upgrade to iTunes 7.0. Users wishing to upgrade to iTunes 7.0 (or who have already upgraded) can install the free Firefly media server to share their libraries with the SoundBridge. Firefly is available at http://www.rokulabs.com/firefly

On a side note, iTunes 7 adds my beloved "Album Artist" logic. Now only if Roku can add that to SoundBridge, too!

how long?

How long do you think it will take before iTunes 7.0 will work as our media server?

It would have been nice to receive an email not to upgrade. I gather that Rolu has no relationship with Apple and that they do not participate in any iTunes Beta program.

Apple

Apple has no relationship with any other hardware vendor but Apple.
Apple just announced their own iTV product today, which is their version of a media player. Don't look for any cooperation on their part.....

Actually, Roku does have a relationship with Apple. They are the only company that I am aware of that has a license to use the DAAP protocol that iTunes uses. But that doesn't mean Apple gives Roku access to iTunes releases before it goes live...

I'm sorry we weren't able to send an advanced email, but that would of course have required Apple to tell us in advance and allow us to basically pre-announce their product, which they would never do. We put up the notices on the forum literally within minutes of the iTunes 7 release, and a mass emailing is going out shortly.

We are definitely working on supporting iTunes 7. I'm not sure yet whether Album Artist will be something we can do, but if it's possible, we'll sure try! :)

RokuMike...

Just curious....

Since Roku has a DAAP licensing relationship with Apple....does Apple actually share technical info with you guys about what has changed?

Or do they just leave it up to you to reverse-engineer and figure out the compatability problems with a new release of iTunes on your own??

Arse!

Postby Prof.Anthrax » Wed Sep 13, 2006 7:27 am

I saw this topic too late and spent most of the morning cursing the M1001.

Does anyone know how to roll-back to an earlier iTunes on a Mac?

Cheers.

So, back to the original question...how long before an update?

We use our M2000 daily and were certainly stung today when it failed to connect.

I'd also recommend trying Firefly as a good solution if you don't want to downgrade to 6 again. The last nightly is quite stable: http://nightlies.mt-daapd.org

And if something is not to your liking, post in the Firefly forum so it can be improved/fixed.

The official statement is the one at the top of the thread, I'm afraid. We don't have a firm date at this point, for a number of reasons that I can't get into here.
