You guys rock. 10 minutes after discovering that iTunes 7 broke my Roku it was working again with Firefly. Thanks.

I upgraded my Itunes on my laptop, but not my desktop(which serves my music) because I caught the email. Once again Roku rules all

I got stung by this (thanks Apple) but got iTunes 6 for Windows back pretty quick.

This is what I did:
1. Uninstall iTunes 7
2. Download the full iTunes 6 install from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html
3. Install iTunes 6
4. iTunes 7 will have updated the "iTunes Library.itl" file. iTunes 6 can't use it and will give an error.
5. Luckily, iTunes seems to make a backup, which I found at "My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries\iTunes Library 2006-09-12.itl"
6. Use this backup copy to overwrite the regular one in the parent directory (My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl)
7. Run iTunes 6 and everything should be back to normal.

DISCLAIMER: This worked fine for me and maybe you'll find it useful.

Good luck!

Firefly

Postby barryt » Thu Sep 14, 2006 2:24 am

I was cross when I updated iTunes, having forgotten to check here first. However I downloaded Firefly and I now don't understand what the fuss is about. Soundbridge with Fiefly works exactly like Soundbridge with iTunes, so I'm completely satisfied.

Does anyone know how to roll-back to an earlier iTunes on a Mac?

Cheers.

Well, Firefly is now the server of choice for me.
I find Apple's actions really underhand, I expect this sort of thing from Microsoft but not Apple.
Good luck to the boffins at Roku, I really feel for you guys for being dropped in it, and fingers crossed you can get the update out sooner rather than later!

We also have an official daap license. But that doesn't buy us anything. Apple (C. K.) keeps telling lies and refuses any help. So it's reverse engineering again...

However, daap between the Soundbridge and the Hifidelio still works! ;) We are a client AND a server, just like iTunes.

Who knows, it might actually be a bug.

I did find one oddity that I consider a bug. For AirTunes to work in iTunes 7, IPv6 needs to be turned on. This doesn't affect the SoundBride issue.

What I find odd is that AirPort Expresses only talk IPv4. (AFAIK). And in my case it's Computer->Airport Extreme->Airport Express, so I find it unusual that IPv6 is now a requirement for AirTunes.

Some coders at Apple haven't done proper testing. And this is true whether or not the DAAP proticol has been modified.

Interested in any developments

Hi there,

I realize this is a commercial product, but has there been any effort to document the current DAAP protocol in any significant way that I have yet to discover, and is there any effort underway to make any new discoveries in reverse engineering iTunes 7 available to other developers?

I'm a developer on the opensource XBoxMediaCenter (http://www.xboxmediacenter.com), which supports DAAP (via a modified version of libdaap) streaming up to iTunes 6, but ofcourse doesn't work with iTunes 7, likely due to the same issues that you guys have.

It would be good to pool resources to get us all back up and running.

Cheers,
Jonathan

I'm sorry, but further talk of reverse-engineering DAAP can't proceed on these forums. Please take it elsewhere. Thanks!

The official statement is the one at the top of the thread, I'm afraid. We don't have a firm date at this point, for a number of reasons that I can't get into here.

Hi,

I was wondering if, without pressuring anybody for an exact date, whether you could at least elaborate on whether we're talking days, weeks or months for a software fix? If it's days or indeed a couple of weeks, I can live with that as I don't really want to download new software and reorganise my music collection. Unfortunately, I upgraded to Itunes 7.0 before reading the forum. No surprise there as all other upgrades have worked flawlessly. Not to worry, however I would really appreciate some idea of the timeframe please...

Kind regards.

It won't be only days. I would recommend downloading Firefly.

The good news is that you don't need to reorganize your music collection to run Firefly. You can continue to use iTunes just as you are now. Firefly will just run in the background, sharing the music that's in your library. Most people don't even need to change any of the default options.

I updated to iTunes 7 before I heard that it broke Soundbridge support.

I happen to own two Slim Devices boxes as well as the Soundbridge Radio, so I'm already running the latest version of SlimServer on the same G5 as iTunes. Of course I know that the Soundbridge Radio will connect to and play from the SlimServer, but it doesn't seem to be assignable to one of the presets.

If I were to install Firefly on the same machine as iTunes 7 and the SlimServer, would that create any problems that you know of? If it does, I'm willing to downgrade back to iTunes 6 on that machine instead.

as you'll see from my profile I run itunes, firefly & slimserver - albeit itunes 6 and the earlier version of slimserver with no problems. You should be fine...
G5, OS X 10.5.8, 2 x M1000, iTunes 9.0.1, slimserver 6.2.1/alienbbc (now redundant), firefly svn 1586, uNSLUng 6.8

Thanks for the quick reply.

As far is firefly goes, can you set it up to only serve a specified playlist? Reason: Within Itunes I have two copies of a lot of my tracks. One is in 128bit AAC (I can fit more on my ipod nano) and the second copy is in 256 MP3 (better sound quality streaming to my Amp). I created 2 smart playlists, one for 128bit AAC and the 2nd for the 256MP3 files), and I only share the MP3 one, thereby not having 2 copies appearing on the soundbridge and a lot of protected itunes music that simply will not play. My worry is that the firefly server will scan all the music in the "My music" folder and will serve it all. Any thoughts or comments will be appreciated...

Thank-you.
